All subsdies are Vote Bank Driven and cornered only by the Rich.
The saddest part is that taxes collected in the name of Defence of our Motherland have been diverted towards Diesel subsidies etc. The most urgently required funds for setting up Mountain Strike Corps have been diverted. Further Indian Air Force`s budget has been trimmed by Rs.10,000 Crore. This has delayed the induction of short listed French Fighters Rafale Fighter Jets.
These are times like 1962.

There should uniform rate for Petrol through out the country.

Taxes can always be modereraed. Decontrol is tedious and politically difficult job.
We have to takcle bull by horns and tack up difficult issues first.

If GST is implemented it will bring about uniform rates of taxes across the country in all states, making movement of goods easier from one state to another, similarly VAT on fuels will also be uniform hence you should root for GST instead.

Punjab Govt. should , also , provide immediate relief to Petrol Consumers in Punjab. Punjab Govt. reduced VAT ( highest in the Country ) and increase VAT on Diesel ( lowest in the country ).

All i know is that this is perhaps the best step that the UPA has taken in it`s 9 year rule, it required a lot of political will, but i would call it only half the work done till they rationalize the taxes on the fuels be it the import duties or VAT because that is a real bane for the ordinary citizen.

British Colonial Masters controlled and Taxed Salt to subjugate Indians ( against which the Mahatma launched Salt Satyagarha ). Post Independence instead of Salt , the Governments , now , exercise control over the general public by Taxing Petrol and Electricity( according to their Vote Bank requirements ).
In a true Democracy , Petrol , Bijli pricing etc should not be left to Politics and Narrow Class Interests but to Economics ans Wider National Interests.
