Dear AK,

I could not interact with my friend for most part of the day as internet was playing a hide n seek game with me ; some glitch which was a source of frustration.

AK, being educated in the Indian society seems to be a sin. The more you care for the law and are law abiding citizen, the more critical it proves for you to be decisive. Be it the CM of Punjab, Haryana or for that matter any agrarian or industry rich state, the managers take more care of them ; since these locals having position in the society the the major source of votes. May be you and me cannot manage that way ; rather would think twice before casting our vote.

Really so much of our time and money is wasted going through the Rocket Science on Tax Laws ( for Non Farmers only ). For taking even a small business decision we have to run to our CA / Income Tax Experts just because we are not Rich Farmers.

Dear Lakshmana,

You are right.

You see land acquisition at the district level where DC is responsible to act on behalf of government,it is a massive work for him to discharge. Being over worked already, this duty should be delegated to a dedicated to an officer of the similar status at the district level. On their land being acquired, they seek matching compensation, alternative avenues of livelihood/employment. The exercise, in itself,is time consuming and generally bring the effected farmer/people to the road with long drawn dharnas, strikes and bundhs. They have the logic while government gives a very raw deal sometimes.

You see in the coal mines case, one finds that there is no scarcity of coal beneath while while are importing coal and paying huge money in terms of forex. The problem again lies with acquisition of effected land, in time, matching if not good amount of compensation and sources of livelihood on people being displaced. Our government needs to very serious and should learn from the past and institute some remedial measures so that the large chunk of coal to meet our requirement of energy domestically than looking at other countries and imbalancing the already dwindling economy which is in dire straits.

Dear AK,

Only farmers enjoy such a feast while domestic consumers are made to share for the loss being suffered by government electricity boards. The gainer being the government it being always a vote bank politics. After all, if they are not in power, they shall simply sit idle with their wards cursing them. Besides not being in power, they would feel many times in-secured having been one time a class in their own.

Dear AK,

You are right.

If a small and one time retail investor like me/you is liable to pay SIT and tax on short term gains, where is the logic that these transactions which run into crore are not brought with the tax liability. It involves massive sum which could go to the national kitty.

Also, some of the seller of such property go in for buying vehicles and attaching them with the companies/private operators who pay mandatory taxes but, large number of transactions go un-noticed. It remains to be seen as to what our government plans to do about them. After all, they add to their riches while liability on account of tax is zero. No doubts, small farmer with marginal holding of land remain under debt thus making their very survival too difficult.

Dear Smartian
Please do , also , consider the gross discrimination in Income Tax Laws. Presently , even if Farmer receives Rs. 10 crore as Land Acquisition Compensation , there is no Income Tax ( Capital Gains Tax ) . Not even the need to even file a Return. The Govt. is being run by Super Rich Farmers .

Nearly all the subsidies made in the name of small farmers is cornered by the Rich and Super Rich Farmers. ( Where is the logic for giving Free Electricity to a farmer ( in Punjab ) who owns Land worth Rs. 1000 Crore +.The Ruling Elite is merely addressing to its narrow class interest.

Difficult to implement such a move. However, incase if it does get implemented then expect diesel shortage in the country due to hoarding by the middle men. Who wants to miss the opportunity to make 25% return in 10 months ....

Hi Smarti, you dealt with this topic in an interesting manner with pleasant involvement. I wish to state further under this topic. Our authorities are concentrating on taxation to receive more income without considering the negative consequences. Regarding the cost escalation I also find many such railway projects in our areas as going with the tortoise speed, by affecting the project cost through the rapid escalation. Complication in land acquisition, labor dispute especially in Kerala, delay in fund allocation etc are major reasons for the cost escalations. The state projects are not exempted from this gloomy scenario. Having one eye on the income angle, the Governments should put their other eyes on more and more creativity and productivity through all the effective and through all the cheaper means. Otherwise the way of multiplying the revenue through the unproductive route means the elephant spraying sand on its own body. And one more important fact is that the benefit in implementing any project should reach exactly to the appropriate and eligible points. Then the need for burdening the citizens by the Governments through frequent taxes does not arise.

DIESEL PRICE TO BE RAISED BY ONE RUPEE EVERY MONTH IS DOABLE IF SUBSIDIES - UNDER RECOVERIES POLICY FOR P.S.U OIL COMPANIES IS COMPLETELY ABOLISHED AND HELPS P.S.U OIL COMPANIES TO IMPROVE THEIR OVERALL VALUATIONS.
