Improve distribution channels through better allocation of existing national resource rather than inviting foreigners who would take away part of the profit otherwise availed by our own people

One of the reasons cited by the Congress (I) government for allowing foreign direct investment (FDI) in retail segment is that foreign investment would improve the distribution channel by eliminating middlemen. It is argued that farmers would benefit as they would be paid better price of farm products with the elimination of middlemen that allegedly sucks 60 to 80 percent of the retail price. It is good if farmers would be paid more for their farm output. However, middlemen are also a part of the society. Often, there is no thin line of distinction between consumers, farmers, middlemen. Farmers and middlemen too are consumers. If the government is willing to improve distribution channel, it is most welcome, but not by creating unemployment situation for millions. In United States of America, stimulus package is much about creating jobs even by artificial means like digging a well and then filling as it would create employment opportunity!

Terms like greater efficiency are not always in the best interest. For instance, there is little point in introducing a particular bill that would reduce price of an equipment of mass consumption by 50 percent and therefore help consumers if the same bill would also create unemployment for even 4 percent of the population. The government should try to improve distribution channels that directly connect farmers with consumers through better allocation of existing national resource rather than inviting foreigners who would take away part of the profit which is otherwise availed by our own middlemen. There should be implementation of laws that prohibit middlemen from black marketing rather than making all middlemen unemployed. Yes, one big foreign multinational company may have the financial resource which our millions of middlemen together could not match. In that case, should our government surrender to that one foreign entity depriving job opportunities for millions of middlemen? Does government has the strategy of creating fresh employment for those who would lose their source of livelihood once the likes of Walmart start connecting smartly directly with farmers and consumers?

PM has asked a question in his yesterday`s speech where does the money come from to give subsidy on fuel. I would like to ask a question to the PM, where does the money come from to give cell phones to people who are below poverty line?
